Luno Buying and Transfers - Status and Limits

Luno supports buying, selling, storing, sending, and receiving cryptocurrency within rules set by region, verification, asset support, and live service status. Before committing a purchase or transfer, compare the amount with the limit shown in your account, confirm that the required payment or blockchain network is available, and review the final quote or send fee. A completed action should leave a transaction record, balance change, or network status that you can reconcile.

Buying, Trading, and Transfers at a Glance

Available actions differ by starting balance and intended destination. Local currency can fund a quoted purchase or exchange order, while cryptocurrency can be held, traded, sent, or received through supported wallets.

Buying, Trading, and Transfers at a Glance
Action State Change and Completion Evidence Main Access or Validation Condition
Local-currency deposit Money credits the matching currency wallet after processing Supported payment method, verified account, and available allowance
Instant buy or sell The accepted quote updates the relevant currency and crypto balances Supported pair, valid quote, and per-transaction bounds
Exchange market order The order matches available liquidity and records each fill Supported market, sufficient balance, and open exchange service
Exchange limit order The order may fill, partially fill, remain open, or be cancelled according to its time-in-force setting and available liquidity Supported market, reserved balance, and the specified limit price
Crypto send The wallet records the debit and subsequent blockchain status Enabled sends, compatible network, authorization, and personal limit
Crypto receive The designated wallet credits funds after the required checks Correct asset, address, network, and any required identifier

These routes are related, but they do not share one universal limit or completion signal. A successful deposit does not guarantee that every purchase size is permitted. Likewise, an asset visible for trading may not support external sends or receives. The account interface should show the applicable route, live amount boundary, cost, and final state.

How Do Region and Verification Change Access?

Account region and verification determine which payment methods, assets, markets, products, and limits appear. Registration is restricted to supported residence countries, and the verified country remains relevant when a customer travels or moves. A transaction may be unavailable in a location where account use is restricted, even if the same feature normally appears at home.

Verification can also control deposit and withdrawal allowances. Where several verification levels exist, completing additional checks may change the displayed allowance. This does not override a separate payment-method cap, per-transaction boundary, or personalized send limit. Read the limit attached to the exact action rather than treating an account level as permission for every route.

Limits Across Transactions and Rolling Periods

Transaction limits follow several clocks. Instant purchases and sales can have minimum and maximum amounts for each transaction. Deposits and fiat withdrawals may be governed by verification allowances, while crypto sends can have dynamic daily, weekly, or monthly limits tailored to the account and region.

A monthly deposit allowance can use a rolling period, so each deposit remains counted for 30 days. Reaching that allowance near the end of a calendar month therefore does not imply that it will reset on the first day of the next month. The available amount should rise as earlier transactions leave the relevant window.

A displayed maximum can also reflect previous activity and the chosen funding method. Splitting one intended purchase into repeated transactions may still count against the same account allowance. It can also create several separate quotes and costs, so the governing limit should be identified before another attempt.

What Should You Check Before Buying?

A purchase check starts with the funding balance, selected route, available asset, and live confirmation screen. An instant-buy quote includes the exchange rate, transaction cost, and exact quantity to be received. The quote normally remains valid for 60 seconds because market conditions can move before confirmation.

Confirming the purchase accepts the live quote and its displayed transaction cost. Compare the final quantity with the amount being spent, then check whether the transaction sits within the displayed minimum and maximum. A cost shown for instant buying does not establish the fee for an exchange order because the two routes use different pricing and execution mechanisms.

Check the status of the intended payment or trading service before confirming. A payment provider, regional deposit rail, instant-purchase feature, or exchange component may be unavailable while unrelated functions continue operating. When the intended route is affected, wait for recovery or select another supported route whose timing, cost, and limits fit the same task.

Instant Quotes and Exchange Orders

Buying routes separate quoted conversion from order-book trading. The choice changes price control, execution state, cost calculation, and the record that confirms completion.

Quoted Purchases

A quoted purchase presents a complete conversion before confirmation. Its displayed rate can include a transaction cost or margin, depending on the verified region and route. Acceptance completes the purchase at that quote, provided it remains valid. The resulting balance update and transaction record are the relevant evidence, rather than an external blockchain confirmation.

Market Orders

A market order uses available orders on the exchange. Execution depends on liquidity, and a larger order may fill at more than one price. The applicable taker fee can depend on the market, region, and trading tier. Completed fills, not the amount first entered, show how much of the order actually executed.

Limit Orders

A limit order specifies both quantity and price. A buy can execute at the limit price or lower, while a sell can execute at the limit price or higher. The order may remain open or fill only in part when sufficient matching liquidity is absent. Funds assigned to an open order may also be unavailable for another purchase until released.

Transfer Networks and Wallet Compatibility

Network compatibility determines whether an external transfer has a valid route. A transfer into a Luno wallet requires both the cryptocurrency and the selected blockchain network to be supported for that wallet. A familiar address format does not establish compatibility, and an asset listed for buying may still have external transfers disabled.

Each receiving wallet is designated for a particular cryptocurrency. Where multiple networks are available for an asset, the selected network must match at both ends. Some destinations also require a memo, tag, or similar identifier in addition to the address. Leaving out a required identifier can prevent correct account allocation even when the blockchain address is valid.

Unsupported transfers may not be recoverable. Before moving a substantial balance, a smaller transfer that meets the displayed minimum can confirm that the destination, network, and supplementary identifier work together. Its completed deposit should appear under the intended wallet after the required network and regulatory checks.

How Can You Distinguish an Outage From an Account Hold?

A platform disruption is more likely when a named service or regional payment route appears as degraded on the live status system. An account-specific restriction instead tends to appear through verification prompts, a disabled send option, a personal limit message, an invalid-address error, or a request for transaction information.

Repeated retries do not repair scheduled maintenance or a payment-provider outage. If the platform component is operating, inspect the exact error, remaining allowance, account verification, and wallet compatibility. A locked account or precautionary send hold requires resolution at account level rather than waiting for a general service recovery.

Failures can also be narrower than either category. A particular asset network may be paused while buying remains available, or one deposit rail may fail while bank transfer continues. Match the error to the action that failed before changing routes, because a working purchase feature does not establish that withdrawals or crypto sends are operational.

Security Controls Around Crypto Sends

Send security combines feature activation, transaction authorization, fraud controls, and regulatory information. These controls can affect availability before the blockchain receives a transaction.

Send Activation

The send function is disabled by default and must be enabled before use. Activation usually takes about 24 hours, but the waiting period can vary by country and account conditions. The account displays the activation date and provides a notification when sending becomes available. Starting activation does not reserve part of a later send limit.

Transaction Authorization

Transaction authorization may require a passkey or two-factor authentication in certain regions. A send should be reviewed carefully because a confirmed blockchain transaction cannot be reversed through the platform. The recipient, asset, network, address, fee, and any memo or tag should all match the intended destination before confirmation.

Travel Rule Details

Travel Rule requirements can add questions about address ownership, the sender or recipient, and whether a wallet is hosted or privately controlled. The required information varies by local implementation. Some incoming transfers may remain unavailable until requested sender details are supplied and verified, even after the blockchain has recorded the transfer.

Completion Evidence and Balance Reconciliation

Completion evidence depends on the route. A quoted purchase should produce a balance update and transaction record. An exchange order may show open, partial, filled, or cancelled status. A crypto send adds a blockchain state, while a receive normally waits for the required confirmations and any account-level review.

A pending state is not automatically a failure. Compare the asset balance, transaction history, order status, and blockchain identifier without submitting a duplicate action. If the sending side shows completion but the destination does not, verify the receiving network, required confirmations, and destination identifier. A platform incident or compliance hold may explain a delay that additional network confirmations cannot resolve.

Costs also need reconciliation. The fee or transaction cost approved at confirmation should be compared with the final record, while the received quantity should be checked against the destination result. This separates an ordinary network fee or order fill from a missing transfer, unsupported route, or balance-update delay.

Choosing Another Functional Route

Choose another route when the current payment method, order type, or transfer network cannot meet the transaction's requirements. A bank transfer may offer different limits from an instant payment method. An exchange limit order provides price control when immediate execution is unnecessary. Neither choice removes verification requirements, available-balance checks, processing time, or regional restrictions.

Custody is a separate decision. Cryptocurrency held in a Luno wallet remains under platform custody, while an external self-custody wallet gives its controller responsibility for private keys and recovery. Monthly Proof of Reserves reports provide a snapshot of customer cryptocurrency reserves and liabilities, but these agreed-upon procedures do not replace a full financial audit.

Buying and holding needs a valid quote or filled order. Sending needs an enabled account, supported network, compatible destination, and sufficient allowance. When any one of those conditions is absent, resolve it or choose a genuinely supported route before committing funds.

Where Is Luno Available for New Account Registration?

New accounts are currently available to residents of Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Residence matters because services, verification, payment methods, assets, and limits are tied to the country where an account is verified. Someone who travels to an unsupported country cannot transact while there. A customer who has permanently relocated to an unsupported country should contact support about a once-off withdrawal.

Why Can an Instant Payment Method Show a Lower Limit Than the Account Allowance?

Instant payment rails can have separate per-transaction controls. The displayed maximum may combine the payment partner's cap, the account allowance, verification status, and recent activity. A temporary reduction may also reflect fraud controls. If bank transfer is available, it may permit a different amount, but its own processing time and deposit rules still apply.

What Fees and Limits Apply When Receiving Cryptocurrency?

Receiving cryptocurrency is usually free, but a very small Bitcoin deposit can incur a fee. Minimum receive amounts, network support, and wallet support vary by asset and region. Compare the deposit with the minimum shown for that wallet before sending. Do not send below the listed minimum; an incompatible asset or network can also lead to loss.

When Should a Destination Memo or Tag Be Supplied?

A destination memo or tag must be supplied whenever the receiving wallet displays one in its deposit details. The wallet address may identify a pooled account, while the memo or tag assigns the transfer to the intended customer. Copy both fields exactly. If the sending service cannot include the required identifier, do not proceed through that route.

Does a Proof of Reserves Report Show the Live Wallet Balance?

No. A Proof of Reserves report reflects balances at a monthly snapshot, so later purchases, sales, sends, and receipts can make today's wallet balance different. The report is available through the web account rather than the mobile app. It covers customer cryptocurrency reserves and liabilities through an agreed-upon procedure, not a full financial audit.

Why Might an Available Cryptocurrency Lack Send or Receive Support?

An asset can be available for buying or holding even when external deposits and withdrawals are not enabled. Transfer support depends on the specific asset, network integration, verified region, and operational state. If external withdrawal is part of the intended use, check for both send and receive support before buying. Tradability alone does not prove that a blockchain transfer route exists.
